The Church Street Refugee Sponsorship Group is raising funds to sponsor three refugees from Africa to come to the Comox Valley.

We are Comox Valley residents who are working together with St Peter’s Anglican Church in Comox and the Anglican Diocese of British Columbia on three separate refugee sponsorships. The refugees are all relatives of a family living here in the valley. The refugees are currently in Ethiopia and Uganda. One is in her 20s and has a degree in Public Health, another is in her 40s. The third is in his 30s and has a degree in Computer Engineering. We are looking forward to meeting all three and helping them to settle in Canada.
How is it possible to sponsor refugees during the pandemic? Well it is not easy, but there are steps we can take right now. Refugee sponsorship takes time and the first steps involve paperwork. Fortunately, this is still possible. So far, we have raised enough funds to submit the paperwork for one of the refugees and are now focussed on raising funds so that we can submit applications for the other two.

Our ultimate goal is to raise $75,000 ($25,000 for each sponsorship) as it is our responsibility to support each refugee when they arrive for one year once they are fully accepted under Canada’s refugee settlement program. Currently, the focus is on raising half of these funds so the applications to the government for private sponsorship can be submitted.

We need your help.

Ordinarily, we would be busy organizing sales, community teas and other fundraising events. Unfortunately, this pandemic leaves us reliant on direct donations to meet our goal. Thank you so much to everyone who has already made a donation.
If you are able, please consider making a donation. You can make a donation on Canada Helps via St Peter’s Anglican Church, Comox who receives funds on our behalf. (Make sure you select the Church Street Refugee Sponsorship Group in the drop-down box to apply your donation to our fund.)
