New Book Available in Parish Book NookResurgence and Reconciliation: Settler Relations and Earth Teachings Grandfather The book, One Drum, by Richard Wagamese, where the quote comes from, draws on this idea called ‘Grandfather Teachings’, focusing on lessons of humility, respect and courage. This is the spirit I found in the 6th season of the TRC57 Speaker Series. Both Indigenous and Settler participants contributed to the dialogue of formation and understanding between our cultures. The goal is to seek and promote deeper conversations toward rebuilding relationships between peoples and lands for a stronger Canada. The book, Resurgence and Reconciliation: Settler Relations and Earth Teachings, published by University of Toronto Press 2018, is the book presented at this TRC57 Speaker Series. Participants asked questions such as: 1) What if reconciliation with one another is impossible without first reconciling ourselves to the earth? 2) What if the future of reconciliation depends on how we understand the treaties made at the very moment Canada came into being? 3) What does reconciliation look like when it is understood not as a completed task, but as an ongoing practice in our every day lives? 4) How do indigenous teachings, stories, and laws rooted upon the lands we share point toward different possibilities for governance, kinship and co-existence. …and more. I have found both the series and book a help in understanding that there is a more mutual spirit in which legal issues are moving forward. Litigious battles seem to be giving way to a more respectful hopeful process. General news doesn’t often capture this, which still places Indigenous people on the back foot of public sentiment. In part, the series and book are meant to help mediate this perception. Please find it under the ‘Indigenous’ heading in the book nook. |

WITH GRATITUDE
We acknowledge with thanksgiving that we have gathered on the Unceded traditional territory of the K’òmoks First Nation. As a part of the Anglican Church of Canada, a church of Settlers and First Nations, we commit ourselves to a journey of truth and reconciliation between the Indigenous peoples of this land and the non-native peoples of Canada. |
