The Celebration of the Lord’s Passion

 The Ministry of the Word

Prelude Music

Celebrant:    All we like sheep have gone astray;

                        we have turned every one to his own way,

People:          And the Lord has laid on him

 the iniquity of us all.

 Celebrant:   Christ the Lord became obedient unto death,

People:          Even death on a cross.

Celebrant:    Almighty God,

All:                  our heavenly Father,

 we have sinned in thought and word and deed;

 we have not loved you with our whole heart;

 we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

 We pray you of your mercy,

 forgive us all that is past,

 and grant that we may serve you in newness of life

 to the glory of your name. Amen.

Celebrant:    The Grace of God, the love of Christ and the fellowship of the Holy

Spirit be with you all.

People:          And also with you.

Celebrant:    Let us pray.

 Almighty God,

 look graciously, we pray, on this your family,

 for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed

 and given into the hands of sinners,

 and to suffer death upon the cross;

 who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

 one God, for ever and ever.

Personal Reflection

Hymn:  CP #198  O Sacred Head, Surrounded

O sacred head, surrounded

By crown of piercing thorn;

O royal head so wounded,

Reviled, and put to scorn

Death’s shadows rise before you,

The glow of life decays,

Yet angel hosts adore you

And tremble as they gaze!

Your youthfulness and vigour

Are spent, your strength is gone,

And in your tortured figure

I see death drawing on:

What agony of dying,

Wheat love, to sinners free!

My Lord, all grace supplying,

O turn your face on me!

Your sinless soul’s oppression

Was all for sinners’ gain;

Mine, mine was the transgression,

But yours the deadly pain:

I bow my head, my saviour,

For I deserve your place;

O grant to me your favour,

And heal me by your grace.

What language shall I borrow

To thank you, dearest friend,

For this your dying sorrow,

Your mercy without end?

Lord, make me yours forever:

Your servant le me be,

And may I never, never

Betray your love for me.

Celebrant:    Dear people of God, our heavenly Father sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved, that all who believe in him might be delivered from the power of sin and death and become heirs with him of eternal life.

Prayers (Tim Ray) and Collects (Marion Edmondson)

Tim: 1st petition

Silence

Marion: Almighty and everlasting God, by your Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified. Receive our supplications and prayers which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in our vocation and ministry we may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Tim: 2nd petition

Silence

Marion:  Almighty God, kindle, we pray, in every heart the true love of peace, and guide with your wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth, that justice and peace may increase, until the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Tim: 3rd petition

Silence

Marion:  Gracious God, the comfort of all who sorrow, the strength of all who suffer, hear the cry of those in misery and need. In their afflictions show them your mercy, and give us, we pray, the strength to serve them, for the sake of him who suffered for us, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Tim: 4th petition

Silence

Marion:  Merciful God, creator of the peoples of the earth and lover of souls, have compassion on all who do not know you as you are revealed in your Son Jesus Christ. Let your gospel be preached with grace and power to those who have not heard it, turn the hearts of those who resist it, and bring home to your fold those who have gone astray; that there may be one flock under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Tim: 5th petition

Silence

Marion:  O God of unchangeable power and eternal light, look favourably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery. By the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation. Let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn:  How Deep the Father’s Love for Us.

How deep the Father's love for us

How vast beyond all measure

That He should give His only Son

To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss

The Father turns His face away

As wounds which mar the Chosen One

Bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross

My sin upon His shoulders

Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice

Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there

Until it was accomplished

His dying breath has brought me life

I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything

No gifts, no power, no wisdom

But I will boast in Jesus Christ

His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?

I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

Why should I gain from His reward?

I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

Celebrant This is the wood of the cross, on which hung the Saviour of the world. If

we have died with him, we shall also live with him; if we endure, we shall also reign with him.

People: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross

you have redeemed the world.

We may take a few minutes, now, to consider the cross and what God has done for us.

Silence for two minutes

Hymn: CP #634 Jesus, Remember Me

Jesus, remember me

when you come into your kingdom

Jesus, remember me

when you come into your kingdom

Repeat as needed.

The Lord’s Prayer:  And now we pray as our Lord taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever.  Amen

We conclude with a prayer:  Send down your abundant blessing, Lord, upon your people who have devoutly recalled the death of your Son in the sure and certain hope of the resurrection. Grant them pardon; bring them comfort. May their faith grow stronger and their eternal salvation be assured. We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen
